چکیده

Outline shape carries a substantial part of the information present in an object view, and is more economical than classical representations such as geon-structural-descriptions or multiple-views. We demonstrate the utility of silhouette representations for a variety of visual tasks, ranging from basic-level categorization to nding the best view of an object. All these tasks necessitate the computation of silhouette similarity. We present an algorithm for estimating silhouette similarity and apply it to a number of simple but realistic vision problems.

Representation of object similarity in human vision: psychophysics and a computational model

We report results from perceptual judgment, delayed matching to sample and long-term memory recall experiments, which indicate that the human visual system can support metrically veridical representations of similarities among 3D objects. In all the experiments, animal-like computer-rendered stimuli formed regular planar configurations in a common 70-dimensional parameter space. These configura...

Explorations of Shape Space

Using a small number of prototypical reference objects to span the internal shape representation space has been suggested as a general approach to the problem of object representation in vision (Edelman, 1995c). We have investigated the ability of human subjects to form the low-dimensional metric shape representation space predicted by this approach. In each of a series of experiments, which in...

Three Virtues of Similarity-based Multivariate Pattern Analysis: An example from the human object vision pathway

We present an fMRI investigation of object representation in the human ventral vision pathway highlighting three aspects of similarity analysis that make it especially useful for illuminating the representational content underlying neural activation patterns. First, similarity structures allow for an abstract depiction of representational content in a given brain region. This is demonstrated us...

COMPARING FEATURES OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECT MODELS USING REGISTRATION BASED ON SURFACE CURVATURE SIGNATURES by Timothy David Gatzke ADVISOR: Professor Cindy M. Grimm December 2006 Saint Louis, Missouri This dissertation presents a technique for comparing local shape properties for similar three-dimensional objects represented by meshes. We develop a shape representation that is sensitive to ...

Space as a Semiotic Object: A Three-Dimensional Model of Vertical Structure of Space in Calvino’s Invisible Cities

Following the “spatial turn” of the last 3 decades in humanities and social sciences and the structure of semiotic object, this research studies space as the main semiotic object of Calvino’s (1972) Invisible Cities. Significance of this application resides in examining the possibility of providing a more concrete methodology based on the integration of Zoran’s (1984) 3 vertical levels of const...
